
Nuziveedu Seeds Limited (NSL) is among the leading seed companies in India with R&D and breeding programs in 24 crops (9 field crops including Cotton, Maize, Rice, Pearl millet, Mustard, Sunflower, Wheat, Jute, Sorghum and Forage crops and 15 vegetable crops including Tomato, Okra, Chillies, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Sweet corn, Cucumber, Ridge gourd, Bottle gourd, Bitter gourd, Snake gourd, Watermelon, Pumpkin, Radish and Carrot). In addition to the above crops, NSL has recently initiated breeding programs in forage crops and a few more vegetable crops. NSL’s elaborate plant breeding programs are laid on the foundation of excellence in plant breeding for genetic improvement of crops to develop plant varieties with significant genetic gains. NSL’s R&D programs are supported by strong molecular biology and biotechnology system for not only fast tracking varietal development programs, but also to support quality assurance of seeds.
The products of R&D, viz., improved plant varieties (Varieties and hybrids) are evaluated comprehensively by the Product evaluation and Development teams and plant varieties suitable for specific agro-climatic conditions and agronomic requirements are identified for commercialization. The shortlisted products identified for commercialization are tested in farmer’s fields in the form of Front Line Demonstrations (FLDs) and then launched in the market. NSL multiplies the seeds of promising varieties and hybrids through 25000+ growers in 8 States.
The multiplied seed is tested for quality standards both at field and laboratory level including genetic purity testing through Grow-Out-Test and also through biotechnological approaches. NSL’s Seed Technology Laboratory (STL) is among the six ISTA accredited STLs in India with a strong process driven quality assurance system. The seed cleared from quality assurance function is processed and packed in 14 processing plants of NSL and supplied to nearly 6000 distributors and 55000 retailers across 22 States of India to nearly 8 million farmers. NSL’s mastery of supply chain in terms of consistent delivery of quality seed for many years is backed by a strong quality driven supply chain infrastructure with a conditioned storage space of 35000 tons and 80000sft of ambient storage. The supply chain system is also structured with SAP Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software system integrating core processes and functions for operational efficiency. NSL has also empowered its more than 1500+ employees with digital and Information and communication Technology (ICT) tools such as NSL-SAATHI, NSL-Vyapar Mitra, NSL-HR Connect, etc. NSL’s plant varieties in almost all crops have performed excellently and contributing significantly to the productivity and profitability to millions of farmers in India and with a vision to be the most preferred seed brand, NSL is poised to work and deliver its promise consistently.

Fast Facts about Nuziveedu Seeds Limited (NSL)
NSL was founded by Shri Mandava Venkat Ramaiah, Chairman –Emeritus, NSL in 1973 at the advent of Green revolution period at Tukkuluru near Nuziveedu town in Andhra Pradesh.
NSL was incorporated under company act in 1985.
Since 1985 under the dynamic leadership of Shri Mandava Prabhakar Rao, Master of Science (Agronomy) from BHU and a Gold medalist, the company scaled phenomenal heights.
NSL started its Cotton breeding programs in 1980s and 1990s and developed its first blockbuster hybrid NCS-1.
NSL released its Blockbuster long staple Cotton hybrid Bunny in 1996 and Mallika in 1997. Both Bunny and Mallika were notified by Government of India in 1998.
NSL initiated its breeding programs in cereals, millets, other field crops and vegetable crops in 1990s and the first decade of millennium.
NSL was recipient of several awards and accolades including the DSIR award for R&D excellence in 2002.
NSL became the first private sector seed company to clock Rs 100 crore in the year 2002.
- NSL’s Cotton hybrid Bunny is recognized as a benchmark reference variety for Long staple length in Cotton (29.5mm-30.5mm).
In the Bt cotton era, NSL emerged as the largest Bt Cotton hybrid seed company maintaining 20%-30% market in various markets. Given the leadership in Cotton breeding, NSL NSL also has the highest no. of GEAC (Genetic Engineering Approval Committee) approvals commercialization of GM Cotton hybrids.
NSL became the first private sector seed company to clock Rs 1000 crore in the year 2012.
NSL acquired Pravardhan Seeds Private Limited (PSPL), Yaaganti Seeds Private Limited (YSPL) and Prabhat Agri Biotech Limited,(PABL) in 2010, 2010 and 2011 respectively.
NSL was recognized consistently as the top Bio-Agri company in India from 2008 to 2015 by ABLE Biospectrum survey for Biotechnology industry.
NSL was ranked 3rd in R&D by Access to Seeds Index for contributing to the development of smallholder farmers in a global ranking index for the year 2019 in South Asia and South-East Asia region. NSL was also ranked 9th in overall achievement across various dimensions for development of Small holder Agriculture.
